Allow ExplainStats in your Google Workspace

For Google Workspace administrators: make ExplainStats available to students and staff, in about five minutes. Nothing to host, no account to create.

Updated: October 13, 2026

Before you start

  • You need the Google Workspace Marketplace administrator privilege; Google asks for a super administrator to install an app for the organization.
  • ExplainStats asks for three narrow permissions only: the current spreadsheet, its sidebar, and the account's e-mail address (to check a licence key and, when passes are on sale, to pre-fill the payment page). Everything is in the data sheet.

Option A: install it for everyone (recommended for schools)

  1. In the Google Admin console, go to Menu › Apps › Google Workspace Marketplace apps › Apps list.
  2. Click Install app, search for ExplainStats and open it.
  3. Click Admin install, then Continue, and review the data access.
  4. Choose Everyone at your organization, or Certain groups or organizational units (for example one department or the students of one course), then Finish.

Users then find ExplainStats under Extensions › ExplainStats in Google Sheets, with nothing to install themselves. It can take a few hours to reach every account.

Option B: let people install it themselves (allowlist)

  1. Go to Menu › Apps › Google Workspace Marketplace apps › Apps list.
  2. Click Allowlist app, search for ExplainStats and click Select.
  3. Allow it, click Continue, choose the organizational units or groups, then Finish.
  4. Check that the Marketplace settings let users install and run allowlisted apps.

Students designated as under 18

In Google Workspace for Education, users designated as under 18 are blocked by default from Marketplace apps that are neither allowlisted nor admin installed. Option A or option B above unblocks ExplainStats for them. Their access requests also appear in the Admin console under App access control, where you can approve them. Your organization remains responsible for obtaining parental consent where it is required.

Check that it works

  1. With a test account of the unit you chose, open a spreadsheet: the menu Extensions › ExplainStats is there.
  2. Choose Insert sample data, then Open ExplainStats, and run the which-test Assistant on the sample.
  3. If the menu is missing, reload the spreadsheet; if Google shows a permission screen, accept both spreadsheet and sidebar permissions.

Licences for your school

  • Class licence (one teacher, up to 150 students): the teacher gives a class code; students paste it once, with no e-mail address asked. €99 a year.
  • Institution licence (every account of your domain): one key that each person pastes once. From €490 a year, on quote, with an invoice or a purchase order.

Removing ExplainStats

In Apps › Google Workspace Marketplace apps, open the Domain Installed Apps tab, click ExplainStats, then View organizational units and groups and set them to Off. Results already written into spreadsheets stay there as ordinary content.

Menu names follow Google's Admin console help as of October 2026; Google may rename them. Questions: [email protected].
